November Project Night

An evening of friendly face-time, sponsored by PluralSight.

Bring a laptop. Bring ideas. Bring questions. Bring enthusiasm.  The Boston Python Project Night is a time to find others with compatible interests, and work away.  Code, hack, teach, learn, meet, laugh, talk: it all happens at Project Night.

All skill levels are welcome.  There will be at least two tables of beginning learners, and helpers for them.  Other table-topics in the past have been Django, Data, Web Scraping, Hardware, Puzzle, Science, Art.  Anything goes!

Pizza will be provided, of course. You can't do your best work on an empty stomach!

Any data science folks interested in helping out. I have a project and need help with python distance matching between strings and possibly extending the project to Machine learning ! Kindly let me know I can use a lot of help!

I've never been to Microsoft NERD (I'm a UNIX hacker with years of anti-MS bias, but I'm working on it). How's the wifi there? Most of my coding is done on remote machines.

    • Ned B.

For 90% of people, the wifi is fine. For a small number, it is hard to get working.

I've never had a problem. It's pretty good IMO.

    Check this out:

    merge_in event_dataset person_dataset by person_id
    some procedural code:
    if age<70 then age_group="B"
    for j = 1 to 10
    more procedural code, etc
    write_out name_of_output_dataset

Variable names (usually) match with names of columns in a database table, the procedural code is COMPILED to run FAST on a dataset with many rows. This is a very simple idea, and a very old idea (older than me). Because the syntax is so simple, you can teach it to high school kids. Some may think this simple idea belongs to the dinosaur age.
But for data cleaning and data prep. work, this has been and still is a key part of the tool box.

@Dan. Thanks for the heads up. That must have been what was keeping me from RSVPing. I was able to RSVP this afternoon. Thanks all.
