Search for the Perfect Thanksgiving Wine 2023!!!

Details

Hey we're back!!

And what better way to re-start our in-person wine events than a repeat of our popular "Search for the perfect wine to pair with your family's Thanksgving dinner" event!

Truth be told, pairing wines with a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner isn't easy. There's simply too much variety on the table! Turkey offers two distinct protein experiences: white meat from the breast and dark meat from the leg with fattier taste and texture. And then there are the side-dishes--potatoes, turnips, cranberries, stuffing, pearl onions, sweet potatoes, etc. It's a complicated melange of flavors, textures, starches, proteins and vegetables. What should you serve to accompany all this? Let's find some great pairings together for the "big meal".

COST

This event is FREE, and open to all members. You will choose and provide the wines and provide the food (see details below).

POLICIES

Limited to 20 total including +1s. If the event is full, RSVP to get on the wait list, but please don't RSVP unless you're sure that you can make it. Keep your RSVP up-to-date--this is going to be a very popular event!

WHAT TO BRING

Attendees should bring a wine from the list below and an appetizer portion to share that is reminiscent of holiday foods, i.e. Turkey, Cranberry, Pumpkin, Stuffing, Sweet Potato, etc..

We are open to wines from around the world. To bring some focus to our efforts, however, we'll group the wines that you bring into 3 overall flights:

  • white
  • red
  • dessert

The secret to successfully pairing a wine with Thanksgiving food is ACID. A wine with balanced acidity can handle sweet, fat, acidic, salty, and starchy foods.

Each flight will showcase wines that work best with traditional Thanksgiving fare.

Since its such a special holiday, we've increased our usual price range to: $20-$40.

Here are the flights

White Wine Flight
With white wines the pairing priority is finding a wine with well-balanced acidity.

  • Sparkling white or rose
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Riesling, Gewurztraminer
  • Viognier

Red Wine Flight
Red wines we are looking for balanced tanins

  • Pinot Noir
  • Beaujolais Crus (Morgon, Fleurie, Bouilly, Moulin-à-Vent, etc.)
  • Shirah/z
  • Zinfandel

Dessert Wine Flight
Focus here is on fortified wines like Sherry, Port, or high sugar wines etc.

  • Oloroso Sherry
  • Tawny Port
  • late harvest Riesling
  • Sauternes

It would be great if we could get several bottles of the some of these wines, so please post your choices ASAP. If the above lineup proves too restrictive for someone (!?), then bring a wildcard. :-)
