You Have a Frond in Me - Balboa Park Palm Canyon

Hosted By
Bill E.

Details
Take a peripatetic palm tour of San Diego’s iconic floral symbol in Balboa Park’s Palm Canyon. Given the geographic size, Southern California has one of the highest varieties of palm species of anywhere in the world, yet only one is a native! Where do they come from, how did they get here, why were so many planted, how do they survive hurricanes, are they good or bad for the environment, are they trees or something else? The walk will focus on the most common palms found in San Diego, as well as some less frequent palms, and provide commentary on some false-palms and exotic non-palms found in the canyon. Meet at the Balboa Park Visitor's Center.
