Kate O. Sessions Cactus Garden - Balboa Park

Balboa Park has more than 15 formal gardens, including two devoted to plants that live in arid/desert environments. One of these two is the recently restored cactus garden dedicated to Kate Sessions. Due to historical accident, it is hidden and rarely visited even though it contains over 200 plants collected from around the world. Some are strikingly beautiful in their symmetry, while others are alien looking as if from another planet. These 'extremophytes' have found numerous similar and unique ways to survive in environments where most life forms are unable to live. Several of the plants can only be found in this area of Balboa Park. The tour will focus on examining the clever adaptations and beauty of the many fascinating forms.
