Here are some plants we saw:
-Sticki Gilia (Gilia calcarea or Aliciella pinnatifida)
    -Parry's Milkvetch (Astragalus parryi)
-Blazingstar (either Nuttalia sinuata or speciosa) we never quite decided which one it was, but either way it was really pretty.

the hawthorn (Crataegus) was blooming in full force, as was the golden currant (Ribes aureum). We saw a hackelia of some sort. found some dames rocket (Hesperis matronalis). Had a great side by side comparison of of shepard's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) and pennycress (Thlaspi arvense). happy botanizing!!

Had a great walk to the sandbar and saw some really interesting plants. We were looking at an astragalus and Vickey gave us some hints on how to tell astragalus and their close cousins appart:

    1) is there a tendril on the end of the leaf?
    yes: vetch or peavine
    no: go to 2

    2) are there leaves on the floweing stem?
    yes: go to 3
no: leaves all basall, go to 4

    3) does keel have a beak?
    no: milkvetch

    4) does keel have a beak?
    yes: locoweed

here is what the botany club will be doing this week:
Just a note to remind you all that we will meet again this coming Wed. May 22, 5-7P at the Carson Nature classroom. From there we'll carpool to the Wolhurst Trailer Park.
From there, we'll hike to the fossil sand bar and identify and learn about the sand bar plants.
