Renewable Energy Parks as Economic Development Engines

Details

With the retirement of several large coal generating plants in Colorado and throughout the country, communities are faced with replacing high paying jobs and tax revenue. Energy Innovation has developed a concept to utilize Renewable Energy Parks to backfill these operations and create additional local economic development opportunities that were not afforded by the large generating stations. Renewable Energy Parks integrate multiple renewable energy source and storage solutions and co-locate them with electricity consumers such as factories or data centers with all connected to the grid at a single point and utilizing existing transmission infrastructure.
We’ll be joined by Michelle Solomon, Electricity Program Manager with Energy Innovation, who’ll cover:

  • Overview of the Renewable Energy Park Concept
  • The Renewable Energy Park components and how they work together (i.e., renewable generation, batteries, and flexible electricity consumers such as thermal energy storage)
  • Benefits of the Energy Park Concept
  • Modeling results from Pueblo study
  • Policy considerations
