Talk 1: packwerk: a little dev utility ... and a total game changer by Stephan Hagemann from Gusto
Description: Shopify released packwerk into open source in 2020. It may not have been around for long, but it is a game changer in how we can manage the complexities within our applications. It makes modularization work easier, more approachable, more iterable, and probably also more fun. With other approaches like micro services or gems and engines we need to have a lot of the answers when at the start. With packwerk we can start with an idea and learn along the way where we want to go and what we need to do to get there.
Let’s make some packages!
Bio: Stephan has been thinking about and working on increasing the modularizability of Ruby and Rails codebase since 2010. He proposed component-based Rails applications in 2013. When joining Gusto in 2020 the topic again became directly relevant to his day job as he is now working on foundation engineering that aims to give product engineers en ever more productive system to work in.

Talk 2: Mental Health In Technology by Jen Akullian from Growth Coaching Institute
Description: Mental health needs more attention, especially in an industry with high expectations that has normalized long hours and burnout. Technology is demanding. Innovation has a high frequency of failure. Add normal life stressors, add a global pandemic. How these challenges impact our mental health needs to be discussed openly now more than ever. As a society where this topic has been neglected for generations, it's time to bring it to the forefront of discussion. Let's get it started.
Bio: Jen is a former psychologist, focusing her work in technology since 2015. Founder and Executive Coach at Growth Coaching Institute, she works one-on-one with professionals and supports the health of organizations. In a demanding industry, much of her work focuses on mental wellness and managing industry-specific burnout at an individual-level, and company-wide supportive practices. Jen is an advisor on mental health in tech, where her mission is to de-stigmatize prevalent challenges and speak candidly about the impact of stress, mental health and burnout. Jen collaborates with Open Sourcing Mental Illness (OSMI), whose research suggests a higher prevalence of diagnosed mental health conditions among professionals working in tech in comparison to the general population. Considering these statistics and the industry's unique demands, she believes mental health is a topic in need of momentous attention and consideration.
