Jakub Piech: One Job, Many Worlds: Product Management in Startups vs Enterprises
Is the role of a Product Manager the same everywhere? Absolutely not. In a startup, a PM is often the CEO, the salesperson, and the janitor all at once - fighting for survival. In an enterprise, it’s a game of strategy, stakeholder diplomacy, and massive scale.
In this talk, Jakub will dissect these two realities based on his journey from raising €250k for his own venture to driving AI initiatives on mobile at Box. You will learn how decision-making frameworks shift, how risk appetite changes, and most importantly - how engineers can thrive in both environments by understanding the "business why" behind the roadmap. Whether you are a mobile developer, a backend engineer, or dreaming of founding your own company, this session is for you.Marcin Borkowski: The Paved Path: Accelerating Development Velocity Through Opinionated Infrastructure
In high-growth technology companies, engineering teams face a constant tension between development speed and architectural consistency. The "paved path" philosophy offers a proven solution - providing developers with opinionated, well-maintained infrastructure and tooling that makes the "right way" also the "easy way."
This talk explores how leading tech companies implement paved path strategies to:- Reduce cognitive load on engineers by eliminating repetitive architectural decisions
- Accelerate feature delivery through standardized, battle-tested patterns
- Maintain system reliability and security at scale
- Enable teams to focus on business logic rather than infrastructure concerns
About the speakers
Jakub Piech, Product Manager @ Box - A seasoned Product Manager with a rich track record spanning startups, software houses, and established product companies. Currently, Jakub manages the Box Mobile App, acting as the primary driver for bringing AI capabilities to the mobile ecosystem.
His perspective is built on years of hands-on experience across various IT sectors. Before joining Box, he served as a Technical Product Manager at ExpertSender, where he owned the roadmap for a massive Marketing Automation platform (competing with Salesforce MC) and managed the entire product discovery process. Prior to that, as a Product Owner at STX Next, he delivered high-impact projects for international clients in a fast-paced software house environment. Jakub also brings a founder’s DNA to the table - he co-founded TeamFeedback, raised pre-seed funding, and successfully navigated top accelerators.Marcin Borkowski, Staff Software Engineer @ Box - With a career spanning over two decades at companies like Box and Netflix, Marcin specializes in bridging the gap between complex distributed systems and tangible product value. He is an advocate for a product-oriented mindset, focusing on helping engineers and organizations look beyond the code to reach their full potential. In his spare time, he travels to immerse himself in new cultures and is currently writing a book exploring the evolving dynamic of relationships in the age of AI.
