How and Why People Count Butterflies
What is the global state of biodiversity? The answer is the goal of a worldwide array of programs devoted to monitoring plant and animal populations. A focus of these programs are butterflies which are large and easy to identify. This talk will cover how butterfly counts are done, what happens to the tallies, and what has been learned. There will be a focus on results from the annual fall count done at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum since 2007 and from analyses on a larger geographic scale. The news is not good, but there will be suggestions for what we can do to support biodiversity.Cost:

What is it like to be a Bat? An Introduction to Bats of Arizona and What Makes Bats so Cool
There’s so much to love and learn about bats, which, at more than 1450 species, make up nearly a quarter of the world’s mammals! Arizona is home to 29 species. Our incredible diversity includes three nectar bats, four tree-foliage roosting species, a black and white bat with long pink ears, a scorpion-eating bat, as well as the largest and smallest (U.S.) bat species. We’ll explore what it’s like to be a bat by looking at the life history of some of Arizona’s most charismatic species and take a deep dive into what makes echolocation such an amazing superpower.Cost:
