Slideshow Exchange & Cooking a Haskell Curry with Applicative Functors

Details

This event is co-organised by the Budapest Haskell User Group, the Budapest Functional Programming Group, and EPAM. Please use EPAM's site to RSVP for both parts of the event:
https://community-z.com/events/it-night-bp/talks/1529
https://community-z.com/events/it-night-bp/talks/1583

Our next meetup will have two parts, a Slideshow Exchange with short, fun talks, and a talk by Érdi Gergő called Cooking a Haskell Curry with Applicative Functors.

## Slideshow Exchange

During the Exchange there will be 5-6 presenters, each of them will hold a short, 5-10 min. talk with Haskell or FP topic, but the twist is that they will present each other's slides. Who will present what will be drawn at the start of the meetup.

Some general tips, and guidelines:

  1. Make sure the slides are written in good faith. No point in making completely nonsensical slides. Also, don't forget that there is going to be an audience, and they should have fun too, and also possibly maybe learn something.
  2. The topic should be something that would be a good fit for a talk for our group: Haskell or functional programming related in general.
  3. Aim for 5-10 minutes.
  4. We will draw the presenter order, and the presenter-slide mappings right at the start of the meetup.
  5. Easiest is if you can produce a single PDF with the slides, and send that to us. Because I am also going to be participating, make sure the filename doesn't contain any spoilers -- safest is to just use your name as the filename. Also, to avoid spoilers from file preview, add an extra blank page to the beginning. Alternatively, bring your own machine to the meetup and we will set it up with your slides there.
  6. Have fun!

If you would like to participate in the Slideshow Exchange, please prepare a Haskell (of FP concept) focused slides for some other participant to present, and contact us on the meetup site, or write and email to me at: daniel.berecz@gmail.com

## Cooking a Haskell Curry with Applicative Functors

After the Exchange, Érdi Gergő will hold his talk called "Cooking a Haskell Curry with Applicative Functors".

### Description

Let's see if we can use the power of Haskell to write recipes that avoid four common problems that cooks face every day the world over:

  1. Needing to rent a universe-sized warehouse to hold all possible raw ingredients
  2. Starting World War 3 due to a recipe that calls for launching the missiles
  3. Having to take multiple trips to the store because ingredients are only discovered during cooking
  4. Finding out that the ingredients list was incorrect: some unused meat is spoiling in the corner, while the recipe is suddenly calling for eggplant but the grocery store is already closed...

## Venue

We'll hold the meetup at EPAM, during their IT Night event.
The description of the event:

"Featured talks on Java, mobile development, .NET, iOS, Data and BA related topics. Dedicated Haskell stream by our partners and one operated by the Learning & Development team.

If you find no interesting topic in any streams, you can try break the code in the "escape room" or have fun with other activities."
