Future of Typography

Details

Brands are increasingly on the lookout for custom typefaces in order to stand out in a world where touch points are getting more and more and even smaller. Their logotypes and branding have to be outstanding, speak louder than ever and stand on their own. The digital transformation opens up new possibilities for typography to push the existing boundaries even further. Many designers imagine a world in which the number of fonts used on a website or app is not limited by load speed, a few weights and widths, or by the availability of styles in a font family. To others using more than two typefaces in a design is pure chaos. Whatever your opinion is, the future of typography is heading towards variable fonts with a higher degree of freedom.

What are variable fonts? How do they work? What do variable fonts mean for design? How are shapeshifting fonts evolving, and are they here to stay? How does the digital transformation change typography? What happened in 2019 in the world of typography and what more to expect?

This meetup tries to find answers to these questions and seeks to give an orientation in the changing world of typography. For this MeetUp creative people and exceptional talents who work with typography in a variety of ways have been invited to discuss these topics with the audience:

Martina Flor combines her talents as both a designer and an illustrator in the drawing of letters. She is the author of the best selling hand lettering instruction book „The Golden Secrets of Lettering“ (2016). Based in Berlin, she runs one of the world’s leading studios in lettering and custom typography, working for clients all over the globe such as The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, HarperCollins, Monotype, Etsy, Adobe, Mercedes Benz, Lufthansa, and Cosmopolitan, among many others.

Bianca Berning from Dalton Maag. Their comprehensive portfolio of finely-crafted typefaces has brought distinction to logotypes, character to body copy, and clarity to communications in over 100 languages for over 25 years. Dalton Maag has worked with brands across industry sectors including Netflix, BBC, Amazon, Nokia, BMW, Vodafone, Ubuntu and Toyota. They have developed versatile, long-lasting multi-script font families for them that perform just as reliably in print, desktop, app and mobile environments.
