About us

Have you lost relationships over politics or religion? Wish there was a place where you could get to truly know your neighbors?

In a time of division and isolation, come be part of the community that's rebuilding the town square, one table at a time.

In BreadBreakers, we use the ancient space of the dining table to have conversations where people can hear, be heard, and know one another. We are a neighborhood that spans difference, a haven for compassionate discourse, and a community where people of all stripes can truly belong together.

Here’s how it works: Each month, we gather at Lake Anne Community Center to spend two hours together breaking bread, listening, and connecting. Guided by experienced table host facilitators, we tell our stories, try to understand each other, and practice being in community with those of different views or backgrounds.

At some tables, we’ll discuss pieces of the human experience – our stories, how we deal with life challenges, how we find meaning. At other tables, we’ll focus on good discourse – current events, how we see the world, big topics in the national conversation.

At every table, we’ll strive to put curiosity over convincing, compassion over contempt, and connection over competition. We’ll make these commitments to each other, and our table hosts and ground rules will be there to help when we fall short.

Hungry for more? The BreadBreakers community extends far beyond the dinner table—from weekend lunches to game nights, community service to book clubs, there are always more ways for you to dive deeper. Stay connected by signing up for the BreadBreakers newsletter. Or get even more involved by volunteering—as a table host, an event helper, or a member of the teams that work on projects to grow our BreadBreakers community or improve the BreadBreakers experience.

However, you’re involved, just know that you are welcomed and valued—exactly as you are, no matter who you are, and for no other reason than the fact you’re a human being.

As a religiously inclusive initiative by Restoration United Methodist Church in Reston, VA, BreadBreakers is rooted in the belief that all people bear what several religious traditions call the Imago Dei—the image of God. But whether you call it the spark of the divine or inherent human worth, the upshot is the same: every person matters.

What does “religiously inclusive” mean? It means that all faiths, beliefs, and stripes are welcomed. Our leadership and community is a blend of people who attend Restoration, and people who don’t. We are a place where those of all walks of life can hear and be heard, without trying to convince or convert.

We’ll see you at the table.
