Policies — Brevard Atheists & Secular Humanists (BASH)
Inclusion Statement
As an organization, Brevard Atheists & Secular Humanists (BASH) recognizes that many injustices are rooted in longstanding systemic inequalities, and we commit ourselves to stopping the perpetuation of these injustices and inequalities in how we speak, act, and conduct business. We are committed to holding ourselves accountable and we expect those participating with us at BASH-hosted events will do the same.
To be recognized as a place where non-religious people of every label feel welcome, BASH must represent the diversity of the local freethought community through our programs, our people, and our priorities as humanists. While non-believers often understand marginalization and privilege along religious lines, we may not recognize it as it relates to other marginalized identities. Black, Indigenous, people of color, Latinx, LGBTQIA+, disabled individuals, women, and other communities all overlap with the freethought community in differing ways.
BASH is committed to working to earn the trust of and building relationships with people within marginalized communities to develop a more inclusive organization and to position us to help effectively and thoughtfully protect and strengthen the rights and liberties of all people.

Code of Conduct
Brevard Atheists & Secular Humanists (BASH) is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment. This Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for behavior at all BASH-hosted events, ensuring that everyone can enjoy and participate in our programs free from harassment and discrimination.
BASH events are safe spaces for discussing religious experiences and ideas. The presence of those who may be uncomfortable with criticism of religion does not mean we avoid these topics, but we must be respectful of those engaging in dialogue.
Expected Behavior

  • Respect and Inclusivity: Treat everyone with respect, kindness, and consideration, recognizing the diversity of identities, backgrounds, and perspectives. Contribute to a positive and respectful atmosphere and stay open to new ideas and perspectives. Support a welcoming environment for people of all ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities.
  • Confidentiality: Respect the privacy and confidentiality of fellow participants, especially when discussing sensitive personal experiences or beliefs. Never discuss who has attended BASH events or their religious backgrounds away from BASH events.

Prohibited Behavior
If any attendee, host, venue employee, or other person requests that you stop a prohibited behavior, whether directed at them or not, please do so immediately.

  • Harassment: Any form of harassment, discrimination, or hostile behavior is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, offensive verbal comments, unwelcome physical contact, intimidation, stalking, or any behavior that creates a hostile or intimidating environment.
  • Disruption: Disruptive behavior that interferes with the ability of others to enjoy and participate in BASH events is not permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, excessive interruptions, aggressive or demeaning speech, or actions that hinder the flow of discussions or activities.
  • Retaliation: Retaliation against individuals who report violations of this Code of Conduct or who participate in investigations is strictly prohibited.

Reporting Incidents
All reports will be handled with sensitivity, respect, and confidentiality. The BASH Board will review and investigate all reported incidents. If you experience or witness any prohibited behavior, please report it as soon as possible to any of the following:

The BASH Board reserves the right to take appropriate action in response to violations of this Code of Conduct. This may include verbal warnings, removal from an event, or prohibition from attending future BASH events. In cases where the law has been violated, law enforcement will be notified.
Commitment to Improvement
BASH is committed to continuously improving our practices to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all. We welcome feedback and suggestions on how we can enhance our Code of Conduct and our approach to inclusivity.
