What we’re about
Brighthink is a non-profit organisation that hosts events all year round.
We invite academics, journalists and specialists from around the UK and beyond to present talks on a wide range of fascinating and intriguing topics including science, politics, medicine & health, religion and history.
For less than the price of a pint, or a glass of wine, you could spend an evening hearing about the exploratory frontiers of astrophysics, the virality of online conspiracy theories, the pseudoscientific roots of homeopathy or the latest theories of consciousness.
All are welcome - novices, hobbyists & experts alike - and we always end our evenings with an inclusive audience Q&A.

(£6 on the door on the night)All of the Earth's ocean, from the equator to the poles, is a single engine powered by sunlight - a Blue Machine.
Earth is home to a huge story that is rarely told - that of our ocean. Not the fish or the dolphins, but the massive ocean engine itself: what it does, why it works, and the many ways it has influenced animals, weather and human history & culture.Join Helen Czerski as she dives deep to illuminate the murky depths of the ocean engine, examining the messengers, passengers and voyagers that live in it, travel over it, and survive because of it. From the ancient Polynesians who navigated the Pacific by reading the waves to permanent residents of the deep such as the Greenland shark that can live for hundreds of years, she explains the vast currents, invisible ocean walls and underwater waterfalls that all have their place in the ocean's complex, interlinked system.
Helen Czerski's new book Blue Machine is timely, elegant and passionately argued, offering a fresh perspective on what it means to be a citizen of an ocean planet. The understanding it offers is crucial to our future. Drawing on years of experience at the forefront of marine science, Helen captures the magnitude and subtlety of Earth's defining feature, showing us the thrilling extent to which we are at the mercy of this great engine.
Helen Czerski is a physicist, oceanographer and television presenter. She graduated from the University of Cambridge with Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees in Natural Sciences (Physics) and a PhD in experimental explosives physics, particularly Research Department Explosive (RDX).
She is an associate professor in the department of mechanical engineering at University College London. She was previously at the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton.Presentations take place upstairs in the Nightingale Room at the Grand Central Pub, opposite Brighton Station.
