Please note: This talk is on a Thursday; talk starts at 7:30pm
Sound control with Dr Gianluca Memoli, School of Engineering and Informatics, University of Sussex.
Using what we know about the physics of light and applying the same laws to sound, we can devise novel materials, techniques and devices. We can make the sound equivalent of lenses, projectors, cameras, holograms and noise-cancelling filters. In this talk, Gianluca will describe real world applications in entertainment, in hospitals and offices, on heat pumps and soon on everyone’s windows.

Gianluca has been working in acoustics for 21ys, and some of you may have heard him talking about bubbles, his first acoustic love. This time, he will share with us 10 years of his newest passion: advanced materials. It will be what you always wanted sound to do for you and more. A physicist, an engineer, an inventor, an amateur thespian and a proud father of two, Gianluca has won multiple awards for science communication in his career. He currently divides his work time between his students at Sussex and his role within the company Metasonixx Ltd.
