Running in the Family: Can We Help Anxious Parents to Raise Confident Children? with Prof Sam Cartwright-Hatton, 7:30pm on Wednesday 11 November at Wagner Hall

Why do mental health problems run in families? And, more importantly, can we do anything to stop this? We know that children of parents who have anxiety disorders are at increased risk of developing mental health problems themselves. But what can we actually do about it? In this session, Sam will explore the fascinating science of how anxiety influences the way parents think, feel and behave, and how this might affect the way they respond to their children. She will share some surprising findings from her research into helping anxious parents raise confident children, and ask whether changing the way we parent could help break the cycle of anxiety from one generation to the next.

Sam Cartwright-Hatton is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Sussex. Her research focuses on understanding and preventing anxiety disorders and other mental health problems in children, particularly the role that parents can play in shaping children’s emotional development. She has spent over 20 years developing and evaluating interventions to support parents and improve children’s mental health, with a particular interest in translating psychological research into practical, accessible help for families.
