Beachcombing + Coastal Storytelling with Ruby

Details

This creative workshop, ran by Ruby, will explore the coastline as a place of change and transformation. We will engage with found objects on Brighton beach to inspire storytelling, and engage with folklore and mythological histories. Ruby will support you to try this through drawing, writing, or performance.

Meeting Point: Outside Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf (near Yellowave / Madeira Drive)

What is beachcombing?
Beachcombing is the simple, mindful practice of walking along the shoreline and noticing what the sea has left behind - shells, sea glass, driftwood, colours, textures, stories. It’s an act of slowing down, paying attention, and letting yourself be surprised by what the tide offers up.

In our Common Ground session with Ruby, we’ll explore Brighton Beach together in a gentle, reflective way - looking, sharing, and connecting to the rhythm of the coast. You don’t need to bring anything but your curiosity and your presence 🌊

Accessibility Info:

  • Public Transport: Nearest bus stops are Paston Place and Burlington Street both served by frequent city centre routes including 7, 12, 14, 27, 37, 52.
  • Train: Around a 15-minute walk from Brighton Station.
  • Wheelchair Access: From what I know currently the only step-free access from Marine Parade down to Madeira Drive is via the start of Madeira Drive or the end. This is due to the on-going works being done to the Madeira Terrace restoration. However, where we will be beachcombing, we will be walking along the boardwalk which is flat. The beach itself is pebbled and uneven, which may be difficult for some mobility aids.
  • Toilets: Accessible public toilets nearby (closest are at Yellowave and near the Peter Pan playground - RADAR key may be needed).
  • Seating: No fixed seating - bring a blanket, beach chair, or cushion if you’d like.
  • Sensory Considerations: Expect beach sounds (waves, seagulls, people). We'll gather in a quieter spot near the meeting point to create a soft and reflective space.

About Common Ground & Mind, Body + Earth
Common Ground is a summer-long series of creative and wellbeing gatherings in Brighton’s green spaces - from tucked-away corners to wide open parks. Each session is led by someone from the community offering their unique gift, whether it’s movement, storytelling, music, art, or simply holding space.

Rooted in the belief that everyone has something to offer, Common Ground invites connection: to ourselves, to each other, and to the land around us.

Sessions are free, donation-based, or raising funds for causes close to the facilitator’s heart - all intentionally designed to be accessible, low-pressure, and heart-led. It’s less about being a “participant” and more about being part of something shared.

The series is run by Mind, Body & Earth (MBE) - a community-led project founded by Meg, an artist and facilitator passionate about the healing power of creativity, nature, and shared presence.
MBE exists to create spaces where people feel a sense of belonging - where care, creativity, and connection are valued over performance or perfection.

Whether you're here to draw, walk, play, reflect, or simply be - you are part of the community we’re building. And your presence is a gift.
