Welcome to the first Brighton Gophers event!

In this event we'll be joined by James Halsall and Nathalia Rus.

James Halsall

If he wasn’t a programmer, he’d be a chef.

James has been programming since he was 14 years old, learning PHP and JavaScript before moving on to Go. As a 'Principal Software Engineer' at Inviqa Ltd, he’s now been using Go almost daily for over 3 years.

His talk ‘Grasping Go’ is ideal for anyone new to the Go language (even if you have no Go experience). James will explain what Go is and discuss the best features and limitations of the language. He’ll answer that all-important question … ‘How could Go make my life as an engineer easier?’.

Nathalia Rus

Nathalia isn’t your typical software engineer.

Before becoming a Co-founder and Software Engineer at Custodian, she was a Politics Graduate at the University of Edinburgh and an MMA fighter.

Nathalia’s talk ‘Elegant and flexible marshalling using type definitions’ will help you learn how to structure your code in a more scalable and maintainable way when interacting with many third-party dependencies (such as databases, rest APIs and third-party APIs). She will discuss types and struct tags and walk us through custom marshal and unmarshal functions.

Brighton Gophers

Brighton Gophers is a new Brighton-based community for anyone interested in the Go programming language. We are in phase one, with our first event happening in just three weeks time!

Our initial aim is to gather some gophers, along with those keen to develop Go skills and begin to share experiences and ideas. In the future we'll be running workshops, talks, and discussions guided by our community on Meetup or in our slack channel.
