Hi Everyone,

I just joined the group. I tried Christianity when I was young - tried as hard as I could to believe. I was too intelligent to believe. I'm now a happy athiest having escaped the indoctrination. I developed a deep distaste for mysticism of all types in my years of untangling the affects religion had on my subsconscious. But athiesm is not a philosophy; it's the absense of one.

So I'm interested in seeing what philosophy of life the individuals of this meetup hold. I assume you love reason and science and recognize the Rennaissance as the reference point for the good in Western life (actually even further back, ancient Greece).

I believe: logical thought and sensory data are an individuals only means of knowledge, there is only one reality and it's the one we percieve with our five senses, in ethics, rationality, productive purpose and self esteem guide my actions (I'm an egoist) and I'm not just "basically honest" - I'm a priest of the truth, the purpose of gov't is to protect freedom (abolish force from social relationships), and the only worthwhile school of art is romantic realism ("romantic" implying a standard of beauty and virtue and "realism" meaning the way life might be and ought to be as opposed to fantasy).

Looking forward to meeting you.

Hey John,

Welcome to the group. I look forward to meeting you as well. This link has a statement the group developed a few years back describing our "core". http://www.meetup.com...

When you get past the core issues, we might vary a bit. We are a pretty diverse group. We're more about being social and supportive than getting the "right" dogma. Some of us might be civil libertarians while others may be socialists. We share our differences, but try not to debate them and especially not get combative because we are more about commonalities.
