Is Imperialism Always Immoral?

Note to Attendees: Please consider making a $5 donation to contribute to the running costs of this Meetup.

From the Roman Empire to modern geopolitical interventions, imperialism has shaped the world in ways both destructive and defining. While many now view imperialism through a purely critical lens, others argue that not all instances of imperial expansion are created equal. As historian Niall Ferguson provocatively suggested, “Imperialism may have been the least evil way to instil some kind of order in a very disorderly world.”

At our next meetup, we’ll unpack the morality and complexity of imperialism—past and present. The questions we will address at this meetup are as follows:

  1. Can imperialism ever be morally justified, or is it inherently oppressive?
  2. Have any empires brought about long-term benefits for the societies they ruled?
  3. Should we seriously consider reviving empire in some form—political, economic, or cultural?

This event will be held at The Osbourne Hotel in the Fortitude Valley. Attendees are encouraged to enjoy a meal or drink to support the venue.

PLEASE NOTE:
– This is intended to be a good-natured but robust discussion. Please be respectful and prepared to have your ideas challenged. If you are easily offended, this event may not be for you.
