Marianne North - An Intrepid Botanical Artist

Details
This event is at the Wynnum Manly Historical Society. Chris Seymour will be talking about the intrepid botanical painter Marianne North who traversed the world in the late 19th century, painting the local flora and sometimes the fauna and scenery.
In 1880 she came to Brisbane and stayed at Government House, painting among other things the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. She travelled by ship, train, Cobb and Co Carriages and private means. In Queensland she visited Dalby, Toowoomba, Stanthorpe and the Bunya Mountains before moving on to NSW and Victoria. In six months in Australia she completed 120 oil paintings, in vivid colours.
She was a friend of Charles Darwin, who had recommended she come to Australia after seeing her paintings from the Amazon Basin, India and Sumatra.

I am giving the same talk with a bit more emphasis on Marianne's painting techniques at the Royal Queensland Art Society meeting at the Petrie Terrace Gallery (163 Petrie Terrace) on Sunday April 7. The cost is $15 for non-members and includes afternoon tea. It runs from 2 pm to 4 pm. Anyone is welcome to attend, and you can pay at the door or on Marianne North – An Intrepid Victorian Traveller and Painter | Humanitix.
