Afternoon Tea at Royal Queensland Art Society

Details
This is a regular monthly meeting of members. Chris Seymour will be giving a talk on the Victorian artist Marianne North, who came to Brisbane in 1880 and then travelled Australia for seven months, visiting all the then colonies. During this time, she completed 80 oil paintings, in vivid colour.
She was a friend of Charles Darwin and many of her paintings are of botanical subjects. She was well connected and met with the emperor of Brazil, the Rajah of Sarawak and other figures. In Brisbane she stayed at Government House. She was an early feminist - declaring "marriage is a form of slavery".
The cost is $15, payable at the door or at Marianne North – An Intrepid Victorian Traveller and Painter | Humanitix.
