Song was special to medieval musicians, audiences & intellectuals. Music theorists in the medieval West believed the human voice was the only instrument created by God, while composers of secular love lyrics described themselves as 'writing and speaking in song' when they composed in vernacular languages. This program explores the wide range of medieval vocal music - including the chants of Hildegard, the lyric songs of Marchaut and the troubadours, early opera and sacred & secular polyphony alike. Program highlights will include . . .
Hildegard von Bingen Laus Trinitati
Las Huelgas Codex Fa, fa, ut/Ut, re, mi
Cantigas de Santa Maria Par Deus, muit' a gran vertude
Marc-Antoine Charpentier Troisième Leçon de Ténèbres du Mercredi Saint,
Guiraut de Bornelh Reis glorios
Francesco Landini Ecco la primavera
John Dowland I saw my Lady weep
