💡 Speaker:

Just Berkhout, Technical Support Engineer, Confluent

Bio:

Just Berkhout is a Technical Support Engineer at Confluent, he spends his time sometimes rescuing, and sometimes enabling his customers across many aspects of Confluent Cloud, Confluent Platform, and Apache Kafka®. He brings experience in cloud computing, application development, and data management from the public sector, the private sector as well as academia. He lives in Brisbane, Australia, but you should also ask him about Tasmania, or Townsville. Or Perth. Or Rotterdam.

Talk:

Experiences with tightly coupled Producer applications: There Be Gremlins

Abstract:

As an elaborate excuse to talk about Kafka Producer capabilities for data durability and low message delivery latency and high throughput, Just Berkhout, a Technical Support Engineer for Confluent by day, will highlight two examples of Producer applications that inadvertently undo some or all of the benefits of decoupling distributed clients from their distributed servers. Kafka producer clients, the Kafka cluster, and the protocols that operate between them are a robust set of tools to set data in motion. At scale, elastically, durably, quickly, enterprisely. Venture too far outside of good practice, though, and your application might miss the sweet spot. This talk introduces two ways to inadvertently create dependencies, introduce tight coupling, and covertly re-implement a request-response pattern in a Kafka producer application. This is a developer and architect topic intended to show some of the power of Kafka producer clients and give the audience ideas on how to adopt it, rather than fight it.
