Livestream: WebOTP, Performance MySQL, OpenTelemetry Sim, Webpage to desktop app

Details

Hi Everyone! Sorry for the last minute announcement - it's been a big few weeks of work! Incredible news though - we have FOUR speakers to thrill and amaze with tales of web technology! RSVP to get your link and subscribe to the BrisJS youtube!

πŸ“Ή Youtube Livestream of the Virtual Event:
If you RSVP on meetup you'll see the youtube link on this event page (on the right sidebar!), and you can subscribe to the BrisJS youtube channel (https://youtube.com/c/BrisJS/) to get the alert and link of the stream going live πŸ‘

❓ Questions/voting and feedback will be gathered using Slido for Q&A:
https://app.sli.do/event/wtjsTKZXyiuBZCvFfMW2wY or use code #222.
I'd be ever so grateful for this wonderful community of ours to get their thinking caps on now and contribute a talk of any length for any of the upcoming meetup monthly events. Your talks keep BrisJS alive!
---------------

πŸ” WebOTP - Phil Nash - 30m (Twitter: @philnash)
It's a common practice to verify a phone number or implement two factor authentication by sending a one time password over SMS. We can all agree that it's a pretty terrible user experience though.
This process may increase security, but the friction can decrease conversion and the user experience in general. Android and iOS have APIs to combat this, so why not the web? In this talk we'll take a look at autocomplete and the WebOTP API to see how the web platform can help us build secure flows and a better experience all round.

⏩ High Performance MySQL - James Harvey - 20m (LinkedIn: james-harvey-brisbane)
James dives into getting the maximum performance out of queries. Explaining how indexing works under the hood and provide some tips and anti-patterns along the way. Pick up these essential MySQL tips for your next Node project.

πŸ” How I Accidentally Built a OpenTelemetry Simulator in NodeJS and what I learnt - Andrei Hawke - 15m (Twitter: @AndreiHawke)
He's recovered from ill health and ready to present this one we were teased last month. Andrei took on a Christmas 2021 Project to dive into OpenTelemetry, and like the title said, ended up with unexpectedly more! He'll help cover his experience and:

  • How NodeJS OpenTelemetry Libraries Helped
  • Demo of what was produced (visualised)
  • Engineering Aspects of OpenTelemetry to consider

⚑️ Lightning talk - How to turn any web page into a desktop application in 5 minutes - Ashley Davis - 10m (Twitter: @codecapers)
Ashley has a real quick demo of a fun tool he found called `nativefier` that can take any web page and package it in just moments into a stand-alone Electron application. It's great for those important web pages that you sometimes lose among all the tabs/windows of your web browser! Put them in their own application so you can find them more easily.

Lots of opportunity for Q&A through Slido too! Get your thinking caps on and see you on the night!
