RE: [ruby-74] Rails Hosting

I concur wrt slice host, I’ve used them for a couple of years now and they have been very reliable.

I am currently using http://www.rackspacecloud.com/ to host a symfony project (sorry about that...), rack space cloud are about half the cost of slice host for the same 256M/10G package (with backups)

I'd definitely recommend http://www.linode.com

They are slightly cheaper than SliceHost and have much more features (choosing structure of your filesystem, choosing the data centre, partitioning your drives and mounting virtual drives in any slice (one at a time, of course). I have both Linode and SliceHost and I've found linode to be slightly faster on average and it has lower latency (which makes SSH sessions and deploys more enjoyable). That may be because I can choose the data centre though.

I believe they are so good I won't even tell you use to my linode referral code (incidentally it's at http://www.linode.com/?r=3f13c3dccad0b01f5c7b6069e6a84b3451cd6067)

Disclaimer: while this email doesn't tell you to use my referral, there may or may not be subtle hints :P Seriously though, Linode kicks ass.

Hi Bevan,

If you like to do everything yourself (which I do).

I use the $20pm 256MB/10GB plan + $5pm for 3 snapshots (e.g. backups).

The bonus with this is you get a full environment (not shared), you can run whatever you want, and it will scale as required.

These have been very stable / fast for me thus far.

http://articles.slicehost.com/rails

Their (user contributed) articles are good – not just for slicehost, but helpful in general.

Hope that helps (there are many other good VPS getting around as well – see Google).

Cheers!

Tod.
