Day Trip to The South Wales Coast (Porthcrawl & Ogmore By Sea)

Join me for our monthly day trip where we get out of Bristol for a day of fun and adventure exploring some of nearby interesting historic towns/villages and countryside. All trips are arranged with public transport in mind but you drive over if you wish.

This month we will visit the South Wales Coast where we will do an 8 mile 3 hour walk between Porthcrawl and Ogmore By Sea along the South Wales coast path. The route is varied and includes scenic beaches, sand dunes and historic sights.

Ogmore Castle:
Sitting on the south bank of the Ewenny River and the east bank of the River Ogmore. The castle is known for its 12th-century stone keep, one of the earliest of its kind in Wales. It can be reached by a number of stepping stones if the tide is out.

Sand Dunes: The route passes through the Merthyr Mawr Warren, which has the highest sand dune in Wales and a haven for a variety of plants, animals and fungi species.

Beaches: The walk passes by various beaches, including Kenfig Sands.

Ruins of Candleston Castle: A 14th-century fortified manor house.

On arrival at Ogmore By Sea we can take some to rest perhaps have a drink at a local pub. If we have the energy we could carry on to Dunraven Bay which contains a popular beach with stunning views of the Bristol channel and see the walled garden. We could also stay to see the sunset and have an evening dinner.

We will take an 11.00 am train from Bristol Temple Meads to Bridgend getting there about 12.30. We will then take a 12.35 pm bus to Porthcrawl getting there at 1.28 pm We will return by bus from Ogmore to Bridgend.

On arrival at Porthcrawl we will allow an hour to explore the harbour, perhaps take a walk to the lighthouse and grab a quick lunch. If you plan to drive over you can meet us at the harbour.

The ticket cost for an off peak day return is €26 with a group save. we will also need to pay for busses in addition. For those driving you can return from Ogmore On Sea to Porthcrawl by taxi alternatively you may wish to park in Bridgend and join us on the bus.

The walk will be moderately challenging so a good level of fitness will be required. This trip will be weather dependant and rescheduled if the conditions are not favourable.
