Day Trip to Caerphilly- Mt Hike, Castle Visit, Cheese Festival 🥾 🏰 🧀 🌲 🏔

Join me for a Day Trip to Caerphilly known traditionally as a Welsh mining town famous for it's cheese making heritage and also boasts a historical Castle which is the 2nd largest in the UK.

We will start with a walk in the Caerphilly Mountain area which lies just outside the town center. The walk will take around 5 miles and just over two hours to complete. From the summit of Caerphilly Mountain we can see wonderful panoramic views of the town along with Cardiff and the Bristol channel with the islands of Steep and Flatholm even being visible on a clear day.

From here we will descend through some winding forest trails to the Wern Ddu Clay pit nature reserve featuring quarry workings around 150 years old and leaving exposed geology estimated to be 300 million years before. The trail returns to the mountain start point but we will cut the walk short here to head to Caerphilly town center.

We can spend the rest of the afternoon checking out the castle and the cheese festival held on the last week of August coinciding with our visit.

Entry to the castle which is surrounded by a moat in the center of town costs €12.80 . It's a great time to visit the castle as it's recently reopened after two years of renovation work with the great hall now restored to it's medieval hey day in the 13th century. New digital and Interactive exhibits explore stories of the castle including power struggles, betrayals and liaisons with people who built and fought over it.

The Cheese festival to the rear of the castle and town center will feature numerous food stalls, live music,street entertainment and opportunities for cheese tasting at the cheese market. The food on offer is most likely sourced locally with an emphasis on Welsh cuisine.

We will take a 10.00 am train from Bristol Temple Meads which will arrive at Caerphilly at 11.25 am. The ticket cost is £20.80 for an off peak day return. If you plan to drive over meet us at the rail station and we will head to the walk start point.
