🏟️🏛️🏘️ Day Trip to Cirencester 🌳 🌷🧺
Details
Join us for a day trip to Cirencester, often known as the “Capital of the Cotswolds.” This historic Roman market town offers a wonderful blend of rich heritage, independent shops, and vibrant local markets.
In particular this weekend is host to the annual Cirencester Food and Lifestyle festival with a delicious range of food and drinks and live music to enjoy.
Moreover, the town has plenty to see and explore:
The Corinium Museum, home to one of the UK’s finest collections of Roman artefacts
The Parish Church of St John Baptist, an impressive and historically significant “wool church” in the marketplace
The Cirencester Roman Amphitheatre, where we can walk around the grassy remains of one of Britain’s largest Roman amphitheatres
New Brewery Arts, offering contemporary crafts, maker studios, and a welcoming café
After a relaxed morning in town, we’ll spend the afternoon on an easy loop walk through Cirencester Park. This beautiful park features grand avenues lined with ancient trees and forms part of the Bathurst Estate. Along the way, we’ll see architectural highlights such as Cirencester House and the tallest yew hedge in the world.
The route also passes through peaceful woodland, including Sally Copse—especially lovely in spring when the bluebells are in bloom—and along the Broad Avenue one of the park’s most notable landmarks.
Travel details:
We will take the 9:00 am train from Bristol Temple Meads, arriving at Cheltenham Spa railway station at 9:38 am. From there, we’ll take the 51 bus to Cirencester, arriving at approximately 11:15 am.
If you are travelling by car, please aim to meet us in Cirencester at that time.
Costs:
Train: €12.80
Bus: a few pounds extra
We’ll return later in the day at a flexible time. There is an option to stop on Cheltenham for dinner if anyone's up for it.
Compared to last month’s more intense hike, this trip is designed to be more relaxed, balancing a gentle walk with time to enjoy the town’s many attractions.
