Join us for our July day trip to the historic town of Tewkesbury, one of the hidden gems of the Cotswolds. Renowned for its beautiful timber-framed medieval buildings, magnificent Norman abbey, and picturesque riverside setting at the meeting point of the Rivers Severn and Avon, Tewkesbury offers a fascinating glimpse into England's rich past.

Our visit coincides with the internationally renowned Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, one of the largest medieval events in Europe and free to attend.

Morning Walk
After arriving in Tewkesbury, we will begin with a gentle one-hour walk around Severn Ham, an ancient water meadow and Site of Special Scientific Interest. This peaceful riverside area offers lovely views of the surrounding countryside and the confluence of the two rivers.

Explore Historic Tewkesbury

Following the walk, there will be free time to explore the town at your own pace. Highlights include:

The magnificent Tewkesbury Abbey, one of the finest Norman churches in England.

The town's atmospheric medieval streets and alleyways, lined with historic timber-framed buildings.

Tewkesbury Museum, which tells the story of the town's rich history.

John Moore Museum, offering fascinating insights into local wildlife, natural history, and rural life.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival

Later in the afternoon, we will make our way to the festival grounds on the site of the former battlefield. Here you can browse the medieval market, enjoy music, dance and entertainment, and explore the living-history encampments that recreate life in the 15th century.

The highlight of the day will be the spectacular re-enactment of the famous Battle of Tewkesbury. Featuring hundreds of costumed participants, armoured knights, authentic weaponry and historically based combat displays, it is an impressive recreation of one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses. We will aim to find a good viewing position to watch the battle unfold.

Travel Information
We plan to take the 9.00 am train from Bristol Temple Meads to Ashchurch for Tewkesbury railway station, arriving at 09.56. From the station, we will take a local bus into Tewkesbury town centre.

The current off-peak day return rail fare is £12.20.

If you are travelling by car, please meet us in Tewkesbury town centre.

We will return to Bristol at a flexible time, depending on individual preferences and how long people wish to spend at the festival and in the town.
