🎨 Explore Teignmouth
11:15 am – 12:45 pm
We’ll begin by exploring Teignmouth, where the River Teign meets the English Channel.
We’ll wander through the Arts Quarter, with its independent galleries, artisan shops and cafés, before with the option to visit the Teignmouth & Shaldon Museum and Heritage Centre to discover the town’s maritime history and Victorian seaside heritage.

We’ll then stroll to Back Beach, one of Teignmouth’s most photographed spots, with colourful fishing boats and views across the estuary towards Shaldon.

⛴️ Ferry to Shaldon
We’ll take the traditional passenger ferry across the River Teign to the village of Shaldon.

The short crossing has connected the two communities for centuries and offers lovely views of the estuary, Teignmouth waterfront and surrounding coastline.
(Ferry fare payable on the day.)

🌺 Discover Shaldon
Before starting the walk, we’ll visit Shaldon Botanical Gardens, a peaceful hidden gem overlooking the estuary. The gardens are home to a variety of subtropical and Mediterranean plants that thrive in the area’s mild coastal climate.

🥾 Shaldon Coastal Circular Walk
Approximately 6 miles (around 3 hours)
Our circular route explores a fine section of the South West Coast Path, combining dramatic cliffs, woodland trails and spectacular coastal scenery.

Highlights include:

Views across Lyme Bay and the English Channel
The historic Smugglers Tunnel
The secluded Ness Cove
Dramatic red sandstone cliffs
Peaceful woodland paths
Viewpoints across the Teign Estuary
Opportunities to spot seabirds and coastal wildlife
Difficulty: Moderate. The route includes hills, steps, uneven paths and some coastal climbs, so comfortable walking footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.

🦞 Evening Food in Teignmouth
After returning by ferry, we’ll have the option to enjoy dinner together at one of Teignmouth’s waterfront restaurants, pubs, bistros or cafés.
As a historic fishing town, Teignmouth offers plenty of seafood choices and traditional fish and chips. There are also vegetarian and meat options available.
If time allows, we’ll take a leisurely stroll along the beach and promenade, enjoying the evening sea air and coastal views before heading back to the station.

🚆 Return to Bristol
We’ll aim to catch the 8:06 pm Great Western Railway service back to Bristol, arriving later in the evening after a fantastic day exploring South Devon.
