Bristol Humanists' Film Club - Pleasantville

Details
The next outing for our Bristol Humanists Film Club is the 1998 fantasy comedy drama, Pleasantville, directed by Gary Ross.
The story focuses on twin siblings, David (Tobey Maguire) and Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) who after breaking their television remote control, are given a new one by a mysterious repairman. This new, magical remote transports the twins into the world of Pleasantville, a black-and-white 1950s sitcom about the idyllic Parker family, where all the residents in the town exist in rigidly static lives of social conformity. Once there, the twins rebellious presence slowly begin to transform the repressive structure of Pleasantville's society, as they introduce a love of beauty, music, sex, art and literature to its residents, literally adding colour to the town and resulting in unforeseen and chaotic consequences. Pleasantville is a thought-provoking tale about human authenticity vs societal repression; how the personal is often entangled with the political; about the liberating effects of art, change and curiosity, and about how much more colourful our lives can be when we challenge the authoritarian dogmas that have us see the world in simple black-and-white.
