Bristol Humanists' Film Club - Never Let Me Go

Details
September's instalment of the Humanists Film Club is the 2010 film Never Let Me Go, based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro and directed by Mark Romanek.
Never Let Me Go is a 2010 British dystopian romantic drama film based on Kazuo Ishiguro's 2005 novel of the same name. The film was directed by Mark Romanek from a screenplay by Alex Garland. Never Let Me Go is set in alternative history and centres on Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy, portrayed by Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield, respectively, who become entangled in a love triangle. Medical breakthrough's have extended human life beyond 100 years, and this issue is explored through the relationships of the 3 protagonists. Many years pass until the 3 meet again, but it is then revealed that they are all clones. The film explores the themes of meaning in human life when lifespan can be almost permanently extended and the idea of self-determination and realisation.
The film divided critics. Christy Lamire said it was 'a gorgeous and provocative look at humanity', while Scott Bowles said of it 'never was a film so bleak and empty'.
Our new Humanists Book Group is currently reading the book.
