ABOUT THE FILM

"France in the late 18th century. Painter Marianne is commissioned by an affluent countess to paint the wedding portrait of her daughter Héloïse, in the hope it will find her a wealthy husband.
While posing as her hired companion, Marianne is instructed to complete the portrait in secret, observing Héloïse by day and painting her by night.
However, as the two women grow closer, their intimacy and attraction begins to blossom, paving the way for a simmering, star-crossed romance."
—Watershed summary

"Céline Sciamma has hypnotizing powers—her spellbinding pull was unmissable in both the sensual Water Lilies and the gleaming coming-of-age tale Girlhood. Portrait of a Lady on Fire, takes that cinematic magnetism to new heights. It’s a delicate drama that flourishes through the liberating power of art, where a hopeful yet consuming love affair sparks between two young women amid patriarchal customs, and stays concealed in their hearts both because of and in spite of it.
★★★★★ Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert .com

"Razor-sharp and shatteringly romantic ... as perfect a film as any to have premiered this year."
★★★★★ David Ehrlich, IndieWire (2019)

"This radiantly sensual film ends on the perfect note, a rush of emotional intensity that’s wrapped in a secret, as hushed as the rustle of silk."
★★★★★ Stephanie Zacharek, Time

"It also happens to be the best ending of a movie this year and the work of a filmmaker completely attuned to both her craft and the inner lives of her characters. Moreover, the shot is the final act of passion and precision in a film that is teeming with both, a work of art whose flame will continue to smolder in your mind and heart well after you have left the theater."
