Unfold at Unboxed
Details
## I am going to introduce you to my favourite place to shop and Toronto’s first no-waste market and eco-conscious grocer, Unboxed Market. The owners, Michelle Genttner & Luis Martins, have spent more than half their lives in the hospitality industry.
It was the restaurant life that opened their eyes: not just to the disconnect that many people today have with their food, but also to the incredible amounts of unnecessary waste that occur every day. Not just packaging (which is a staggering amount on its own), but actual food waste. The Province of Ontario says that Ontarians create enough food waste to fill the Rogers Centre FIVE TIMES every year.
They decided that they needed to do something. The throwaway lifestyle that has become so rampant in today’s society is recognizable everywhere. Having grown up in an area where containers were returned to farmers, and where items from their gardens were brought to the house bundled in dishtowels or baskets, they knew that it was entirely possible.
Bring your own clean containers if you want to do some shopping from nuts, honey, olive oil, flour, pasta, and more! They have excellent produce, dairy, and household products. If you don't have refillable containers, no worry, they have a variety of glass jars to purchase and reuse.
They just opened their cafe counter with everything from a rich espresso to decadent pastries plus a menu filled with delights that will awaken your senses. Select a sandwich or something sweet for our picnic in Coronation Park.
Additionally our group will receive a special sample!
Meet at High Park's Bloor Street W entrance. We will ride along Bloor to Dovercourt and south to Dundas. I will introduce you to Michelle and Luis and they'll share their story with you.
Pick up something for lunch and we will then travel along Dundas to Trinity Bellwoods Park and south on Strachan to the Lake. After the picnic, we’ll return to High Park along Martin Goodman Trail.
Total route 14 km
In case you want more ... I will be continuing west on Bloor St W to ride the new bike lanes west of Runnymede in case anyone wants to continue riding. Might have to stop at Rouge Cafe (Kingsway) for a coffee ☕️
