A waning gibbous moon ride & picnic

Details

Join us for a waning gibbous moon ride and picnic!

Meeting/Departure
We'll gather at PEDAAL, the newest coffee & bike shop in Toronto! Timm and Eric will welcome us with some refreshments. Then the treat! At 5:30 PM you will meet Leah Bobet who will share a beSPOKE poem about the night to come! We will roll out at 6 pm.

The Route
This is a slow short ride with equal emphasis on riding, socializing and enjoying the Toronto evening sky.

West on Harbord, north on Shaw to Bloor St W. Across the protected bikeways to High Park and then pedal south to Martin Goodman Trail and west to Humber Shores Park. 11 KM.

What's a waning gibbous moon?
May’s full Flower Moon reaches peak illumination at 9:53 A.M. (EDT) on Thursday, May 23. On Sunday, the phase of the moon following the full moon is called a waning gibbous moon.

Bring a picnic blanket as we'll be reclining in the Humber Bay Shores Park. Sunset is at 8:48 pm and the waning gibbous moon will come up in the east northeast.

The End
The group ride will be ‘one way’ to the Park so you can exit after the picnic or whenever you like!

What to bring for the ride and picnic?

  • Please do the ABC Check before the meetup: Air, Brakes, and Chain
  • Head light and tail light are essential
  • Picnic blanket if you have one
  • Food! Bring your own OR there are some cafe choices on Marine Parade Drive
  • Beverages

Washroom?
It’s Toronto so pack a porta potty … kidding! There are public washrooms at nearby Sir Casimir Gzowski Park.

Safety
As always safety is paramount and the basis of who we are as a community. Always be respectful amongst each other, motorists, pedestrians, etc. Please ensure your tires are inflated, bike is checked and mechanically sound.

Did you know?
Did you see Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’? You may be wondering, “What is the Flower Moon?” It is the first full Moon in May!

May’s Flower Moon name should be no surprise; flowers spring forth across North America in abundance this month!

  • “Flower Moon” has been attributed to Algonquin peoples, as confirmed by Christina Ruddy of The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre in Pikwakanagan, Ontario.
  • May’s Moon was also referred to as the “Month of Flowers” by Jonathan Carver in his 1798 publication, Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America: 1766, 1767, 1768 (pp. 250-252), as a likely Dakota name. Carver stayed with the Naudowessie (Dakota) over a period of time; his expedition covered the Great Lakes region, including the Wisconsin and Minnesota areas.
  • Henry David Thoreau sparked the Native American Moon names as well, referencing the Flower Moon and Carver when he wrote about Native Americans.
