Speculative Design Futures
by Christie Pedersen, Senior Experience Designer @ Small Planet

Small Planet imagines future states of industries or experiences we are curious about, exercising our rapid prototyping muscles and asking, "What if?" So, we took on Project 2050, a climate initiative based on the idea that 2050 is when 90% of the world's countries have committed to being Net Zero. Our design team split up into three groups, each tackling different speculative projects that show how design can help a (rapidly) changing world.

Christie is a senior experience designer at Small Planet. She believes that empathy is a requirement for successful design and is passionate about the power of interdisciplinary collaboration. Prior to working at Small Planet Christie has worked for a variety of agencies and start-ups, clients include Bristol Myers Squibb, Fitwel, and Penn Interactive.

Why Good Designers Don't Get Hired?
by Hang Xu, Product Designer Turned Talent Agent @ Collective Supply

As a designer-turned-recruiter, Hang has been helping senior designers and researchers land jobs in the current challenging job market. In this talk, we will touch on:

  1. The current state of the UX job market
  2. How the layoffs have affected the demand for specific design skills
  3. Deconstruct the early stage application screening process used to evaluate UX talent

The outcome of this talk is for everyone to gain key actionable insights on how to construct portfolios, resumes, and LinkedIn profiles to make them significantly more hire-able during a down-market. Senior designers and researchers with 5+ years of experience will find the most value but early career designers may leverage some of the same strategies and techniques.

Prior to founding an ethical recruiting agency called Collective Supply in the midst of the worst tech layoff in decades, Hang was a staff UX designer at Boston Dynamics and designed the user interface for their latest robot. You can read his writing on on design strategy, activism in tech, and salary negotiation techniques on his LinkedIn.
