TOPIC: Trash & Recycling Beyond the Curb: We Have a Plan
Every minute in Broward County we are generating 20,000 pounds of waste! Most of it ends up in the landfill or waste-to-energy plant. With the waste-to-energy plant at capacity and the in-county landfill nearing capacity, we need to divert as much of our valuable waste as possible. Approximately 62% of the waste sent to the landfill or waste-to-energy plant could be diverted with the programs presented in the Master Plan. Disrupting the status quo is required to meet the needs of our growing population and economy.
Broward County stands at a pivotal moment in its environmental and public service evolution. As one of the most populous and diverse counties in the State of Florida, we are both uniquely challenged and uniquely positioned to lead in the transition to a more sustainable, efficient, and equitable solid waste and recycling system.
Elisa Jones is an admin and outreach staff member at the Solid Waste Authority of Broward County and a proud Broward Sierra Group member.

Friday April 24th to Sunday 26th
2026 Big Cypress National Preserve- Bear Island CampgroundThe freshwaters of the Big Cypress Swamp, essential to the health of the neighboring Everglades, support the rich marine estuaries along Floridaâs southwest coast. Protecting over 720,000 acres of this vast swamp, Big Cypress National Preserve contains a mixture of tropical and temperate plant communities that are home to a diversity of wildlife, including the elusive Florida Panther.
Bear Island Campground is a primitive campground only accessible down a 20-mile secondary gravel road. Campsites have gravel or grass pads. It offers vault toilets, picnic tables, shared food storage, and fire rings. There is no water available. Make sure to bring PLENTY of fresh water!
We will meet at the Bear Island Campground on Friday, April 24th at 4PM to set up camp. There are four tents allowed per campsite, and we have several campsites reserved.
