Broward Sierra Club July General Meeting

Details
Presenter: Suzee Bailey
Founder of Residents for Resiliency
Topic: Critical Water Issues
The full title of Suzee's presentation is "Highlighting the four critical water issues that aims to bring to the forefront of public awareness: Safe Clean Drinking Water, Flood Mitigation, Storm Resiliency, and Restoring the Health of our Priceless Waterways."
Suzee’s commitment to protecting and restoring South Florida’s waterways led her to found Residents for Resilience (R4R) – a nonprofit organization focused on raising public and governmental awareness about safe and clean drinking water, flood mitigation, coastal resiliency, and to restore the health and vitality of our priceless waterways.
Suzee’s advocacy played a pivotal role in the City of Fort Lauderdale’s partnership with Miami Waterkeeper to implement a Waterway Quality Testing program. Today, ten popular recreational sites are assessed weekly, with bacteria levels published on the Miami Waterkeeper website, R4R website, and the Swim Guide App – helping residents and visitors make informed decisions about marine water activities.
She also successfully advocated Fort Lauderdale’s fertilizer ordinance, banning nitrogen- and phosphorus-based fertilizers from June 1 to September 30, our rainy season, to reduce stormwater runoff, curb algal blooms, and improve water quality. Now, R4R is leading the Restore Our Waterways challenge, collaborating with the city, local businesses, universities, and the private sector to reintroduce millions of oysters and thousands of mangroves into our waterways – implementing long-term, nature-based solutions for water restoration.
