Debate Night: Money in Politics

Details

From campaign ads funded by billionaires to the revolving door between politics and private industry, the influence of money on politics is no longer subtle. In many democracies, the candidate who raises the most money tends to win. Lobbying firms, corporate donors, and wealthy individuals often have far more access to decision-makers than the average citizen. And when public office becomes a stepping stone to lucrative speaking fees, consultancy deals, or board memberships, the line between public service and personal profit has become too blurry to be seen.

Some see this as a natural extension of free speech and free markets basing their belief on the thought “why shouldn't people support causes or politicians they believe in?” Others argue that this trend is eroding trust in institutions, hollowing out the meaning of democracy, and entrenching a system where wealth, not votes, determines power.

Should we rethink how we finance politics and what politicians are allowed to earn, maybe even after they leave office? Or is this simply the cost of doing politics in the modern world?

First-time speakers are welcome to join. Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring paper and a pen.

You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience.
