Debate Night: Peace

Details
"We will bring peace by force." This provocative statement encapsulates the complex and often paradoxical nature of peace throughout history. From the ancient empires to the modern nation-states, the quest for peace has been a tumultuous journey, marked by conflict, negotiation, and sometimes, the imposition of power.
The world has always been embroiled in strife, with each era presenting its own unique challenges. Today, we find ourselves in a particularly volatile time, witnessing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the recent escalations in the Middle East. These events serve as stark reminders that the pursuit of peace is not merely an ideal but a pressing necessity that demands our attention and action.
In this context, we must consider the role of leadership in fostering peace. What qualities define a peacemaker? Is it the ability to negotiate, to inspire, or perhaps to take bold actions that may not always align with conventional wisdom? As we delve into this debate, let us reflect on the complexities of peace and the figures who have shaped its narrative, often in unexpected ways.
This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into four teams of two.
Due to the summer schedule we will not have an exercise prior to the debate.
Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience.
