TIMEWALKERS 4: THE HERMIT, THE ARCHDUKE AND THE ARTIST

Details
In 1475, just when his career was at a pinnacle, a much-celebrated early Netherlandish artist decided to renounce worldly fame and enter a monastery situated deep within the Sonian Forest. Given his great renown, the monastery’s prior allowed the artist to continue to paint there. He even permitted him to receive outside visitors (among them an Archduke!), an unheard-of privilege at this hermit’s retreat dedicated to the ascetic life. On this forest walk we will explore the story of this remarkable place – the Rouge-Cloître – and its most famous resident, Hugo van der Goes.
