📍 The Berendries and Maasdalkbos region, located in the Flemish Ardennes, is known for its rolling hills, loamy soils, and scenic rural landscapes. Berendries is especially famous among cyclists for its steep climbs, while the nearby Maasdalkbos is a small but ecologically valuable deciduous forest.
🌳 The area features a mix of oak, beech, ash, and hornbeam trees, with rich undergrowth supporting various woodland species. Historically, these forests are remnants of larger woodlands cleared during the Middle Ages, and today they reflect a landscape shaped by centuries of agriculture and low-intensity land use.
🪻 Further north, the Hallerbos near Halle in Flemish Brabant is a larger and more intact forest. This ancient woodland, partly replanted after World War I, consists mainly of beech trees that allow light to reach the forest floor in early spring, creating ideal conditions for the bluebells. The Hallerbos is ecologically significant, home to diverse flora and fauna, and is managed to protect its unique biodiversity.
