Cloud Adoption for Business-Critical HBase Workloads - Migrating HBase to Cloud
Details
For the March edition of the Big Data Bucharest Meetup, we are glad to have our friends from Cloudera joining us in this special edition where we'll be covering all aspects of migrating HBase to the cloud.
Cloud adoption has become a key play in an enterprise's digital transformation journey. Enterprises are focused on adopting the Public Cloud and reducing the cost of on-premise infrastructure, taking advantage of the agility and scalability that the public cloud provides them, to accelerate innovation and iterate fast, allowing them to adopt a consumption-based cost model without needing to commit to large capital investments.
Enterprises that are running business-critical applications and data pipelines using Apache HBase thrive on accurate and timely data to drive critical business operations, decision-making processes, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance. However, migrating HBase workloads to the public cloud introduces a different set of challenges and can be a daunting task. To overcome these challenges, new HBase features have emerged and are being developed that enable combining the power of cloud technologies and robust HBase capabilities to deliver an efficient and reliable operational data management platform.
In this talk, we will provide an overview of Apache HBase, Apache Phoenix capabilities and real-life use cases. Then, we'll explore the migration of HBase to the public cloud, features, and architecture that unlock its full potential by combining the cloud scale and elasticity with HBase, challenges experienced while migrating existing on-prem HBase workloads to HBase in the cloud as well as benefits it delivered. And how organisations exploit the setup to empower their data teams to drive cloud agility and implement multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud strategies. Followed by a hands-on technical demo of the Operational Database (HBase) running in Cloudera Data Platform Public Cloud.
Speaker: Nirmal Laddha, Principal Architect at Cloudera
Nirmal Laddha is a Principal Solution Architect for Cloudera and acts as Subject Matter Expert Lead of Cloudera Operational Database which is powered by Apache HBase, Apache Phoenix. In his role, he is focused on helping Cloudera clients and field teams with the migration of Apache HBase to the Cloud, implementing multi-cloud / hybrid cloud architecture, and delivering successful solutions using Apache Phoenix and Apache HBase. Prior to that, he led engineering teams to deliver business-critical solutions with some of the large Apache HBase cluster deployments.
Nirmal has over eighteen years of experience with distributed computing, messaging, big data, streaming technologies, Machine Learning, and Java programming. He works with Apache NiFi, Apache Kafka, Apache HBase, Apache Phoenix, and Apache Spark technologies. Previously, he was a Senior Solutions Engineer at Hortonworks, a Big Data Lead Architect at John Lewis, and worked as a Lead Architect in the banking sector. He holds a BS and MS in Computer Science.
Speaker: Michał Gutowski, CEMEA Solutions Engineer at Cloudera
Nirmal will be joined by his colleague, Michał, who works as a Solutions Engineer and advises clients and partners implementing Cloudera solutions in Central and Eastern Europe on a daily basis. He has 15 years of experience in designing and implementing various services based on software derived from open-source projects. Michał gained experience working for prominent software vendors (Oracle, Citrix, Huawei) and American start-ups (ByteMobile), where he performed several technical and sales engineering roles.
