How important are such groups?
Fighting Social Isolation Changes Your Genes
The science of epigenetics has conclusively demonstrated that support networks can be a life-changing or life-saving experience to an extent surprising to many immunologists and psychologists.
In The Social Life of Genes: Shaping Your Molecular Composition, David Dobbs writes:
“If you actually measure stress, using our best available instruments, it can’t hold a candle to social isolation. Social isolation is the best-established, most robust social or psychological risk factor for disease out there. Nothing can compete.”
“You can’t change your genes. But if we’re even half right about all this, you can change the way your genes behave—which is almost the same thing. By adjusting your environment you can adjust your gene activity...
“Despite these well-known effects, Cole said he was amazed when he started finding that social connectivity wrought such powerful effects on gene expression."

What this means is that the same gene expression that cause a depressive condition to manifest itself can be affected by a positive and supportive social environment to the point the same genetic trait is reduced in severity or even brought to remission.

The Lethality of Loneliness
We are social animals. We were never meant to be alone. Air pollution increases yours odds of an early death by 5%, obesity by 20%, alcohol by 30%, and living with loneliness by 45%.

We’re here to share:
healing
respect
support
strength
friendship
confidence
understanding
encouragement
and so much more
we hope you’ll join and share at our next meeting!

Realize that you're not alone!
Learn from others' struggles, share your own wisdom, and challenge yourself.

A bit on what social anxiety is:
Social anxiety is the fear of day-to-day social situations that involve interaction with other people. You could say social anxiety is the fear of being negatively judged and evaluated by other people. Stress, nervousness, occasional anxiety are all normal and have their role in life. But if fear becomes a driving force in your life, controlling the path you take and keeping you from enjoying things, then it has become something beyond a healthy fear. It is a phobia.

Anxiety may arise when:
- Being introduced to other people
- Being teased or criticized
- Being the center of attention
- Being watched while doing something
- Meeting people in authority/"important people"
- Interacting in relationships, whether friendships or romantic
- Being in public (even crossing the street or shopping at the grocery store)
- In social encounters, especially with strangers but even when surprised by someone you know
- Going around the room in a circle and having to say something (like in a social anxiety support group!)
- Just thinking of interacting with people!

And here's a link to a test to see if you have social anxiety. Every human being falls somewhere along the continuum. Where you fall only gives you an idea of where you are right now.
