Details

Bio:

Markus Winand teaches efficient SQL. He covers both aspects: the development time to accomplish a task using SQL as well as the runtime of the final solution. He also published the book “SQL Performance Explained“ and is currently working on his next book, which is being published on an ongoing basis at http://modern-sql.com/ .

Title: Modern SQL

SQL seems to have gone out of fashion lately—partly due to the NoSQL movement, but mostly because SQL is still used like 20 years ago. As a matter of fact, SQL continued to evolve during the past decades resulting in the current standard of 2011. In this session, we will go through the most important additions since the widely known SQL-92, explain how they work along with some common use-cases. Among others, we will cover Common Table Expressions to organize complex queries and to process hierarchies, and window functions to calculate running totals. Finally we will have a quick look at the so-called temporal features of SQL:2011 that allow you to query data “as of” a specific time.
