We like to say that the Svalbard Archipelago, 600 miles / 1000kms from the North Pole, is “the Galápagos of the Arctic”—and for good reason. Like its equatorial counterpart, Svalbard is a remote, otherworldly laboratory of life, where wildlife, dramatic geology, and fragile ecosystems converge in one of the most pristine environments on Earth.
Danna Walker just got back from Svalbard last week. She explored the region in a 50 passenger expedition ship. She also inspected other ships, some carrying only 12 passengers. She spoke with crew, guides and operators.
Danna will be sharing her findings and answering your questions. If a trip to the actual North Pole isn't really possible for most of us, this is about as close as it gets.
