Philosophy of Love: What Does It Mean to Truly Love Another Person?
Details
(Session in English)
Love is one of the most powerful and mysterious parts of human life, yet it is difficult to say exactly what love is. Is it primarily a feeling, a desire, a choice, a commitment, or a way of relating to another person? Does loving someone mean wanting to possess them, or does genuine love require giving them freedom?
In this philosophy session, we will explore different ideas about love through the thoughts of philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Simone de Beauvoir, Sartre, and Erich Fromm. We will consider love in relation to desire, freedom, identity, vulnerability, sacrifice, jealousy, dependence, and the search for meaning.
The discussion will move beyond the idea of love as simply a romantic emotion and ask deeper questions such as: Can we love someone without losing ourselves? Can love exist without possession? Do we love people for who they are, or for how they make us feel? And can love give meaning to our lives without making us dependent on another person?
Ultimately, the session asks a question that may be impossible to answer completely:
What does it truly mean to love another human being?
