Nietzsche’s Übermensch: Comfort Will Kill You (Eventually)

What does it mean to overcome yourself? In this philosophical session, we explore Friedrich Nietzsche’s controversial idea of the Übermensch—the individual who refuses to simply inherit society’s values and instead seeks to create, transform, and affirm their own existence.

We will examine Nietzsche’s ideas of self-overcoming, the will to power, the death of God, amor fati, and eternal recurrence, using key passages and examples from Thus Spoke Zarathustra, The Gay Science, Beyond Good and Evil, and other works.

At the heart of the discussion is Nietzsche’s striking contrast between the Übermensch and the Last Man: one strives toward growth, creativity and transformation, while the other seeks comfort, security and a life free from struggle.

Is the pursuit of comfort making us weaker? Is suffering necessary for growth? Can we truly create our own values? And are we becoming the people we are capable of becoming—or are we simply becoming more comfortable versions of ourselves?

The session asks a fundamental Nietzschean question:
Are we striving to become more, or have we become satisfied with simply being comfortable?
