What we’re about
Welcome to the Silent Book Club Budapest!
This group is for anyone interested in reading a good (e-)book with a cup of coffee/tea and among like-minded people.
Here we don't have a designated book to complete for a deadline, only a pleasant environment for reading your current favourite book, and sharing your impressions of it if you wish.
The meetings are in person, mostly in a Café, with a simple (usually two-hour) agenda:
- half an hour for introduction of you and your chosen book
- one hour for quiet reading
- half an hour for sharing what you have read, impressions, etc.
Whether you are a trained reader, who seeks for community, an eager novice, who wants to make reading a habit, or just someone, who wants to slow down and enjoy the present for a bit, you are at the right place!
So grab your book and join us!

See all- Budapest Silent Book Club #80 – First Meetup at Szabó Ervin LibraryMetropolitan Ervin Szabó Library, Budapest
Hello everyone,
We’re excited to announce a special edition of the Budapest Silent Book Club—for the first time, we'll be meeting in a library!
Join us on Thursday, May 29, as we settle into a quiet reading session in the Szabó Ervin Library.🗺 How to find us:
We’ll be on the ground floor in a dedicated room. After entering the library, walk toward the elevators. Before reaching the elevators and staircases, turn left toward the restrooms. You’ll find a staircase there—head up, and you’ll see the room where we’ll be reading.💡 Important:
There’s no entry fee for the event! Just tell the staff at the entrance that you're here for the Silent Book Club, and they’ll let you in.
If you’d like to explore the library before or after the event—especially the English-language section on the first floor above the children's library—we recommend getting a daily ticket or a monthly pass, which comes with many discounts.🥤 Note about drinks:
As this is a library, we may not have access to coffee or tea on-site. Please bring a drink in a closable bottle.
If you’d like to eat or drink during the break, you can head down to the lobby area. Here’s our usual agenda:
🕑 17:00–17:30 – Welcome & introductions: Share what you're reading
📖 17:30–18:30 – Silent reading hour
💬 18:30–19:30 – Optional discussionIf you want to see what others have been reading, check out:

🔗 About Silent Book Club - Budapest Silent Book Club: Monthly Book Club – The Penelopiad by Margaret AtwoodZaj Café, Budapest
Hello everyone,
Welcome to the Monthly Book Club — the discussion edition of the Budapest Silent Book Club for those who enjoy reading the same book and sharing thoughts together.
Each month, we usually choose a short book or novella (under 200 pages) — something easy to finish even the day before the meetup 😅. The focus is on light, accessible reads and relaxed, fun conversations.
This time, we’ll be reading The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood — a bold and imaginative retelling of The Odyssey through the voice of Penelope, blending mythology, feminism, and dark humor.
🕕 Time: 18:00–20:00 – Group discussion about the book (no silent reading hour this time)
📍 Location: Zaj CaféI’ll prepare some discussion questions, but everyone’s thoughts are welcome. Whether you loved the book, found it confusing, or haven’t finished it — you’re invited.
